Walk and Talk Therapy (WATT)

Traditional, indoor, face-to-face therapy isn’t for everyone. I offer therapy outdoors. Walk-and-talk therapy is a relaxed way to engage in counselling outdoors while moving gently. Walking side by side can feel less intense without the pressure of constant eye contact can feel more comfortable and help people open up more easily to share personal thoughts and feelings.

Adding movement, reconnecting with and spending time in nature brings proven mental and physical health benefits. Nature supports emotional regulation, grounding, and openness — making therapy feel gentler and more effective.

Introduction to WATT

What to wear:

Sturdy footwear for uneven ground, legs covered, and a coat for changeable weather.

What happens if it rains?

If rain is forecast, we will still plan to walk and I’ll advise you to dress accordingly. Our locations offer natural shelter under trees or canopies. In cases of high winds, torrential rain, extreme cold, or unsafe conditions, I will contact you at least one hour in advance to arrange an online session via Google Meet instead.

Locations

We can walk and talk at a variety of sites which offer a unique, secluded feel with easy access to nearby towns — perfect for a private, uninterrupted session. I currently use a private woodland in Whittington near Lichfield, Mercia Marina in Willington and Markeaton Park in Derby.

Google Maps of locations can be found below.

In addition to walking therapy, we can meet online, which is also our back-up plan for severe weather conditions.

Flexible ways to work together

Online therapy is available where preferred or as a practical alternative during poor weather using Google Meet.

Telephone Walk and Talk

For some clients meeting in person isn’t always practical. Where appropriate sessions can take place remotely by telephone while you walk or spend time outdoors in a place that feels safe and comfortable for you.

This can be helpful when distance, illness or caring responsibilities or temporary circumstances make a face to face session difficult.
